📖 The Curse of Knowledge

📖 The Curse of Knowledge

🎯 Lesson Objective

By the end of this lesson, you'll understand why knowing something can make it surprisingly difficult to imagine what it's like not to know it.

You'll begin asking:

"What am I assuming is obvious simply because it's obvious to me?"

🗝️ Introduction

Imagine an experienced software developer explaining something to a beginner.

The developer says:

"Just call the API, parse the response, map it to your model, and bind it to the UI."

To the experienced developer...

that sounds simple.

To the beginner...

it may sound like five mysteries inside one sentence.

The expert becomes confused:

"What's difficult about this? I explained exactly what to do."

And the beginner thinks:

"I don't understand any of this."

Neither person is necessarily bad at communication.

Something else is happening.

The expert knows so much that it has become difficult to remember what the situation looks like before you know what they know.

This is called the Curse of Knowledge.

🌟 What Is the Curse of Knowledge?

The Curse of Knowledge is the tendency to find it difficult to imagine the perspective of someone who doesn't have the knowledge you already possess.

Once something becomes familiar to you...

it starts feeling:

🔹 Obvious.

🔹 Simple.

🔹 Natural.

🔹 Easy to understand.

You forget how confusing it once was.

And that can quietly influence communication.

🌉 Hero Analogy — The Mountain Guide

Imagine a guide who has climbed the same mountain hundreds of times.

They know:

🔹 Every turn.

🔹 Every landmark.

🔹 Every dangerous section.

🔹 Every shortcut.

Now they're guiding someone who has never climbed the mountain.

The guide walks quickly and says:

"Just follow the obvious path."

But to the beginner...

there are three paths.

Which one is obvious?

To the guide, the route has become so familiar that they no longer see the uncertainty the beginner sees.

The mountain didn't change.

Their knowledge of the mountain changed what the mountain looks like to them.

Knowledge can do the same thing in communication.

💡 One Sentence to Remember

What is obvious after you know it may be invisible before you know it.

🧠 Knowledge Changes What You See

Suppose I show an experienced accountant a financial statement.

They immediately notice:

🔹 Unusual expenses.

🔹 Profit margins.

🔹 Cash-flow problems.

🔹 Financial patterns.

Show the same document to someone with no accounting background...

and they may simply see:

A page full of numbers.

Same information.

Different knowledge.

Different meaning.

Knowledge doesn't merely give us more information.

It changes what we are capable of seeing inside the information.

📖 A Workplace Example

A manager tells a new employee:

"Prepare the monthly report the usual way."

The manager knows exactly what "the usual way" means.

They've seen the report dozens of times.

The new employee hasn't.

The manager expects:

🔹 The correct template.

🔹 Specific metrics.

🔹 Certain charts.

🔹 A particular level of detail.

The employee delivers something completely different.

The manager thinks:

"How could they misunderstand such a simple instruction?"

But simple for whom?

The instruction depended on knowledge that existed in the manager's mind...

but not in the employee's.

⚠️ Familiarity Creates Invisible Information

The more familiar you are with something, the easier it becomes to leave information unstated.

You say:

"You know what I mean."

But perhaps they don't.

You say:

"Do it normally."

Normal according to whose experience?

You say:

"Use the standard process."

Which process?

You say:

"It's obvious."

Obvious to whom?

Often, the missing information feels unnecessary because it already exists inside your head.

🧩 The Curse of Knowledge and Assumptions

The Curse of Knowledge can create a particular kind of assumption:

"They know what I know."

Or:

"They understand what I mean because it's obvious."

But remember what we learned earlier:

An assumption is something we accept without sufficient verification.

Here, the missing information is:

What does the other person actually know?

If we don't check, we may unconsciously use our own knowledge as the standard.

📖 The Expert's Problem

The Curse of Knowledge becomes especially important as you become more experienced.

Imagine teaching a beginner how to use software you've used for ten years.

You say:

"Open Settings."

The beginner asks:

"Where?"

You think:

"Right there!"

But right there is visible to you because your eyes already know where to look.

The beginner's eyes don't.

This explains an important communication paradox:

Knowing more does not automatically make explaining easier.

Sometimes expertise creates a new communication challenge.

You must learn to temporarily step outside your own knowledge.

🌟 Expertise Requires Translation

A great expert doesn't simply know the subject.

They can ask:

"What does this look like from where the learner is standing?"

A manager can ask:

"What context does this employee have?"

A presenter can ask:

"Which concepts does this audience already understand?"

A colleague can ask:

"Which part of this process am I assuming they already know?"

This doesn't mean explaining everything from zero every time.

It means recognizing the knowledge gap before deciding what needs explanation.

🚫 This Is Not Yet a Lesson About Message Design

Later in the course, we'll learn how to intentionally design communication for another person's mental model.

We'll explore questions such as:

🔹 What does my audience know?

🔹 What context do they need?

🔹 What can I simplify?

🔹 What needs explanation?

That's Module 4 territory.

For now, don't solve the entire communication-design problem.

Your job here is simply to notice the knowledge gap.

🔍 The Knowledge Gap Question

Before explaining something, ask:

"What do I know that this person may not know?"

Then ask:

"What am I treating as obvious because I've known it for a long time?"

Those two questions can expose information you were about to leave invisible.

📖 An Everyday Example

Imagine giving directions to someone visiting your home for the first time.

You say:

"Turn right after the old supermarket."

Perfectly clear...

to someone who knows there used to be a supermarket there.

The visitor says:

"What supermarket?"

You suddenly realize your directions relied on shared knowledge that wasn't actually shared.

This happens constantly in communication.

The problem isn't always unclear language.

Sometimes the problem is missing background knowledge.

🧠 Adding Knowledge to Our Meaning-Making Model

Our model now includes another important influence:

🌍 Reality

↓

👁️ Perception

↓

🧠 Internal Influences

Mental Models
Assumptions
Expectations
Emotional State
Cognitive Biases
Prior Knowledge

↓

🔍 Interpretation

↓

💡 Meaning

Two people can receive the same information...

but one person's existing knowledge allows them to interpret details the other person cannot yet see.

That helps explain another source of different meanings.

📌 Key Takeaway

Knowledge is powerful.

But knowledge can create a blind spot:

We forget what the world looked like before we knew what we know.

That can lead us to:

🔹 Skip important context.

🔹 Use unexplained terminology.

🔹 Assume shared background knowledge.

🔹 Underestimate difficulty.

🔹 Believe something is obvious when it isn't.

So remember:

What is obvious to you may only be obvious because of what you already know.

📓 Communication Journal

Think about something you know extremely well.

Perhaps:

🔹 Your profession.

🔹 A software system.

🔹 A hobby.

🔹 A business process.

🔹 A sport.

🔹 A subject you teach.

Now imagine explaining it to a complete beginner.

Ask:

"What do I normally assume people already know?"
"Which words seem obvious to me but may not be obvious to them?"
"What knowledge exists in my head that I might accidentally leave out?"

Write down three examples.

📋 Quick Reference

🎯 Today's Lesson in One Minute

🧠 Curse of Knowledge

Difficulty imagining what something looks like to someone who doesn't know what you know.

It can make us assume:

🔹 "That's obvious."

🔹 "Everyone knows that."

🔹 "I already explained it."

🔹 "They know what I mean."

🔹 "This is easy."

Better Question

"What do I know that they may not know?"

💡 Remember

What is obvious after you know it may be invisible before you know it.

🔄 What Changes After This Lesson?

Before today, when someone failed to understand your explanation, you might have thought:

"I explained it clearly. Why don't they get it?"

After today, you'll add another possibility:

"Maybe my explanation depended on knowledge they don't have yet."

That doesn't automatically mean your explanation was poor.

It simply gives you another place to investigate.

🏁 Conclusion

Knowledge changes perspective.

The more experienced you become, the more patterns you recognize automatically.

Things that once seemed difficult become obvious.

That's one of the benefits of expertise.

But it creates a communication challenge.

You may forget how much invisible knowledge is supporting your understanding.

And then you may expect someone else to create the same meaning...

without giving them the knowledge that made that meaning possible for you.

So when something feels obvious, ask:

"Obvious because it's obvious—or obvious because I already know it?"

We now have nearly all the pieces of our meaning-making system.

And we're ready to answer the question that has been quietly following us through this entire module:

How can two intelligent, reasonable people experience the same event and sincerely see different realities?

🪞 Reflection Questions

🔹 🤔 Why can expertise sometimes make communication more difficult?

🔹 🤔 What's dangerous about saying, "It's obvious"?

🔹 🤔 How is the Curse of Knowledge related to assumptions?

💡 Reflection Answers

🔹 💡 Expertise makes knowledge and patterns automatic, which can make it difficult to remember what the situation looks like without that knowledge.

🔹 💡 Something may feel obvious only because of background knowledge the other person doesn't possess.

🔹 💡 The Curse of Knowledge can lead us to assume that another person knows, sees, or understands information that exists only in our own mind.

🧐 Activity — Explain It to a Beginner

Choose something you know very well.

Explain how to do it in five simple steps as if the other person has never done it before.

Then review your explanation.

Circle every word or instruction that assumes previous knowledge.

For each one, ask:

"Would a true beginner know what this means?"

Don't make the explanation unnecessarily long.

Simply identify where your expertise made invisible knowledge feel obvious.

💡 Activity Solution

Success means discovering at least one place where you thought:

"Of course they would know that."

and then realizing:

"Actually... maybe they wouldn't."

The behavioral shift is:

It's Obvious

↓

Obvious to Whom?

↓

Identify the Knowledge Gap

↓

Recognize What May Be Missing

For now, that's enough.

Later, we'll learn how to design communication around that gap.

But first, we need to bring everything we've learned in Module 2 together.

📖 Next Lesson — Why Two Intelligent People See Different Realities
